“Come closer to me,” he told his brothers. When they had done so, he said: “I am your brother Joseph, whom you once sold into Egypt. But now do not be distressed, and do not reproach yourselves for having sold me here. It was really for the sake of saving lives that God sent me here ahead of you.” – Genesis 45:4-5

Compassion & Forgiveness
Joseph is one of those Biblical characters that reveal a lot about compassion and forgiveness. What his brothers did was unspeakable, but God used their evil act to preserve Joseph’s heart and ensure the future of a nation. Even though Joseph’s brothers were blinded by their own arrogance, God’s plan was bigger. Through everything that happened to Joseph, he remained faithful and he eventually forgave those that wronged him. Joseph’s story reminds us all that God is with us. As we read later on in Genesis 50:20, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” We too should endure so that we can embrace a heart like Joseph’s, one built upon faithfulness and compassion. – Commentary by Matthew Elliott
