Brothers, even if a person is caught in some transgression, you who are spiritual should correct that one in a gentle spirit, looking to yourself, so that you also may not be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so you will fulfill the law of Christ.” – Galatians 6:1-2
Christians aren’t above sin, but no one can stop the feeling of shock when a Christian they know confesses to sin. God’s Word shows us how to respond to this issue. First, godly leaders need to intervene. They aren’t to be sin detectors, but on the sidelines; they are meant to redirect, actively bring Christians back to Christ. Next, the purpose of intervention is restoration. God wants leaders to step in who will bring these Christians to a state of restoration, or soundness in doctrine, lifestyle, and relationships. Third, is humility and compassion. Through the process of intervention, leaders need to be aware of their own futility and vulnerability. If we are not committing everything to Christ, we will find ourselves in the same weakness. How would we want others to respond to us in order to bring us back to Christ? – Commentary by Steffanie Howard
